Meet the Finalists! Cody McBurnett
We can’t help but feel a little more righteous about grabbing a cold one looking at Cody McBurnett’s great propaganda poster for beer. The weapon of the working class, the beverage of the people, beer is culture — in good times and bad. With a triumphant threesome pumping a bottle instead of a flag, it sends a clear message of community, too. Right on! Check out more of the designer’s work at CODYmcBURNETT Marketing by Design, her design firm specializing in creative design and brand identity. Read on for our Q&A with Cody, too.

CM: Sweet, Sweet Action
Where did you learn the tricks of your trade?
CM: The School of Hard Knocks
Where do you like to draw inspiration for your work? (Places, people, a paycheck… )
CM: When I need inspiration, I pour over vintage advertisements, concert, travel, and propaganda posters. But I’m lucky to live in the Greatest City In The World, where every day I get unexpected inspiration from design in its many incarnations: fashion, food, music, interiors, architecture, city streets…
What thoughts, sensations, revelations, or ideas do you hope people take away upon viewing your work?
CM: I aim to capture the viewer’s attention and impart a sense of humor, nostalgia, and light-heartedness.
If you had $1 left and the world was ending tomorrow, what would you spend it on?
CM: Wow. For the life of me, I cannot think of one thing that costs a dollar or less.
Why do you think “Beer Is Culture”?
CM: No matter where I go — Iceland, Italy, Argentina, Panama, France, Mexico, Belgium, Spain — I make a beeline for a local beer at a sidewalk cafe or beachside bar; it’s the quickest way to feel at home anywhere in the world.
